AI glasses put an AI assistant in your field of view. You ask a question with your voice or a gesture, and the answer appears on tiny displays in the lenses — no phone needed. This guide explains how they work, what’s inside them, and how they differ from AR and VR.

AI glasses are wearable smart glasses that run an artificial intelligence assistant. Unlike regular Bluetooth glasses (which only handle audio) or camera-only wearables, they combine:
- Micro-displays — Information is shown in your line of sight, visible only to you
- Voice and sometimes gesture input — You ask questions or give commands without touching a device
- On-device or cloud AI — A language model answers questions, translates speech, or recalls past conversations
- Battery and connectivity — Typically 8–12+ hours of use, with Wi‑Fi or cellular for cloud features
In India, brands like Vayu, Meta Ray-Ban, and (soon) Sarvam Kaze offer AI glasses. They are built for conversation and information first: ask anything, get an answer in your field of view, and in many cases use real-time translation, note-taking, or profession-specific tools.
How do the displays work?
The “glasses” part is a frame with one or two tiny displays — often micro-OLED or similar — that sit near your eyes. Light from the display is directed into your eye (e.g. via waveguides or prisms) so that text and simple graphics appear to float in front of you. Only the wearer sees this; it’s a private display. Brightness (e.g. 2000+ nits) is tuned so you can read in daylight. This is different from AR glasses that overlay 3D objects on the world; AI glasses are focused on text and 2D information.
How does voice and input work?
You speak to the glasses (e.g. “What’s the capital of Rajasthan?” or “Translate what they’re saying”). Built-in microphones capture your voice. Some glasses also use a small gesture ring or touch on the frame to wake the AI or confirm actions. The audio is either processed on the device or sent to the cloud, where a large language model (LLM) generates a response. That response is then shown on the display. Latency is often under a second for simple queries so the experience feels instant.
On-device vs cloud AI
Some AI glasses run a smaller model on the device for basic queries and privacy; others send most requests to the cloud for more powerful answers. Hybrid setups are common: simple or sensitive tasks on-device, complex or language-heavy tasks in the cloud. In India, support for Indian languages (Hindi and other scheduled languages) depends on the model and the brand — for example Vayu supports 50+ languages including all 22 scheduled Indian languages.
Battery and connectivity
AI glasses need enough battery to power the display, mics, and compute. Most aim for 8–12 hours of typical use. Charging is via a cable or a case that doubles as a power bank. For cloud features (translation, heavy AI), Wi‑Fi or a paired phone’s data is used. Some features (e.g. uploaded documents or cached answers) can work offline once synced.
AI glasses vs AR vs VR
AI glasses are built for conversation and information: ask a question, see the answer, use translation or memory. AR glasses (augmented reality) overlay digital objects on the real world — e.g. navigation arrows, game characters — and often need more graphics and sensors. VR headsets replace your view with a virtual environment and are mainly for immersion and gaming. AI glasses are lighter and more “everyday” than most AR/VR devices because they prioritise text and voice over 3D visuals.
What can you do with them?
Typical uses include: getting answers to questions without pulling out your phone; real-time translation in meetings or travel; recording and searching past conversations; and profession-specific tools (e.g. Vayu Med Pro for clinical support, Vayu Legal Edge for case law and contracts).
